Keep Iowa Beautiful Announces New Executive Director

The Keep Iowa Beautiful Board of Directors has appointed Kevin W. Techau as the new Executive Director of Keep Iowa Beautiful.  He was re-elected to the KIB Board in 2017 and served as Vice-Chair in 2018.  He was originally elected to the Board in 2005 and served as Chair from 2006-2013.

“Kevin is a servant leader, giving back to the state of Iowa and our nation in everything he does,” says Reo Menning, Chair of KIB’s Board of Directors.  “KIB will benefit from his steadfast leadership, relationships and long-time commitment to the mission of the organization. He will continue to grow KIB’s positive impact throughout the state.”

“I am very honored to have the opportunity to lead Keep Iowa Beautiful.  I look forward to working with the Board to build on the legacy of Keep Iowa Beautiful’s Founders, Governor Bob Ray and Don Lamberti and longtime Executive Director Gerry Schnepf.”  said Techau.  “At 20 years old, Keep Iowa Beautiful has a great history of partnerships with other organizations and volunteers. Keep Iowa Beautiful provides leadership across Iowa for collective action and individual responsibility to make Iowa a cleaner, more vibrant and beautiful place to live, visit, and conduct business,” he added

Techau is an attorney with Smith, Mills & Schrock with offices in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Omaha. He served as the presidentially appointed United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa 2014-2017. His 35-year public/private career includes service as Commissioner of the Iowa Department of Public Safety and Director of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals and seven years as Associate General Counsel at American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company. Kevin, served as a Judge Advocate with the United States Air Force for seven years.  After leaving active duty, he served with the Iowa Air National Guard for twenty years.  He retired from the Iowa Air National Guard as a Colonel with 27 years of military service.  He was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal.   Kevin has received the Iowa Public Health Heroes Award, University of Iowa, College of Public Health, 2016; Safe Kids Iowa Leadership Award, Blank Children’s Hospital, 2007 and Government Leadership Award, Greater Des Moines Partnership, 2006.

Techau is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Business and College of Law. He completed the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. Past service includes Boards of the Des Moines Public Library, Des Moines Area Religious Council, and the Iowa National Guard Officer’s Association. He currently serves on the Board of America’s Job Honors Award.

Techau assumed his new duties on June 1 replacing founding Executive Director Gerald Schnepf who resigned on May 31st.  Techau and his wife, Stephanie have 2 children and currently reside in Cedar Rapids.

Diamond Vogel and Keep Iowa Beautiful Announce 2019 Grant Awards

Diamond Vogel and Keep Iowa Beautiful announced the grant awards for the 2019 Paint Iowa Beautiful program.  The program provides free paint to a wide variety of public service projects throughout Iowa. This is the second year Diamond Vogel agreed to expand the paint allocation to include Iowa’s 70 state parks.  2020 will mark the 100th anniversary of Iowa’s state park system.

“Governor Reynolds has signed a proclamation designating April as Keep Iowa Beautiful month and we are pleased to do our part by awarding paint to 104 community projects in Iowa,” said Doug Vogel, Vice-President, Marketing, of the Iowa based company.  “The partnership with Keep Iowa Beautiful allows Diamond Vogel to assist and work with the many local volunteers that help build communities, making Iowa the number one state in the nation to live.”

Gerald Schnepf, Executive Director of Keep Iowa Beautiful added, “The Paint Iowa Beautiful program helps us increase our assistance to neighborhoods, communities, historic projects and other public service organizations in improving the attractiveness and beauty of our home areas.  These projects definitely improve the beauty of Iowa, its countryside and its communities.”

In the 16-year partnership with KIB, Diamond Vogel has awarded over 10,488 gallons of paint for 887 community projects in Iowa.

Keep Iowa Beautiful Announces 2019 Awards & Scholarships

The Keep Iowa Beautiful Board of Directors has announced the 2019 annual award winners for enhancing the beauty, cleanliness and attractiveness of the state of Iowa.  The four award categories are community, organization, corporate and individual.  The recipients will be presented their awards in the Governor’s Office at the State Capitol on Thursday, March 28 at 3:00PM.

“The KIB award program is designed to recognize people and organizations that have gone the extra mile to help build stronger Iowa communities,” said Reo Menning, Chair of the KIB Board of Directors.  “A more attractive community improves the economic vitality and cultural climate of where we live and work.”

The awardees are:

The Donald F. Lamberti Hometown Pride Vision Award—MIRIAM ERICKSON BROWN—For her many years of service as KIB president and board member making Iowa a stronger and better place to live.

The Robert D. Ray Community Award for Excellence—COMMUNITY OF PERCIVAL-Following the devastation of a 500-year flood, the local citizens created a vision, and with hard work and dedication developed grant writing and fundraising skills to complete dozens of projects with the help of many volunteers making this community of 87 a stronger and better place to live and work.  (As of the date of this news release the 2019 flood on the Missouri River has broken all-time highwater records.  Percival is experiencing a second 500-year flood in 8 years.)

Corporate Award of Excellence—IOWA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE LIVING ROADWAY TRUST FUND— For the integrated roadside vegetation management grant program making Iowa’s roadsides visually interesting and making Iowa and its’ communities more attractive.

Organization Award of Excellence—OHNWARD BANCSHARES, INC. AND THE MAQUIKETA STATE BANK— for its outstanding corporate citizenship of substantial financial commitments to local projects and encouraging employees to be involved in leadership roles in local committees making our state the #1 place to live and work.

Also, being honored are four Byers Environmental Scholarships to graduating high school students that will be continuing their education in environmental studies at an Iowa College or University.   And a fifth scholarship in honor of William J. Fultz will be presented to a senior planning on studying communications, public relations and/or marketing at an Iowa institution.  Those receiving the 2019 scholarships are:

Keep Iowa Beautiful Photography Contest Winners

Keep Iowa Beautiful (KIB) announced the winners of the 9th Keep Iowa Beautiful Photography Contest aimed at raising awareness of Iowa’s natural and environmental beauty. KIB wants to learn what resonates with Iowans based on the photographs they share through this annual photography contest.

FIRST PLACE: Justin Rogers of Ankeny. “Boone & Scenic Valley railroad Steam Engine” 1st place winner awarded $50 and a one year subscription to Our Iowa magazine.

SECOND PLACE: Ervin Sabic of Waterloo. (The Calm Before the Storm-Downtown Waterloo) 2nd place winner awarded $40 and a one year subscription to Our Iowa magazine.

THIRD PLACE: Willard Sharp of Madrid. (Summer Thunderstorm Near Parkersburg) 3rd place winner awarded $30 and a one year subscription to Our Iowa magazine.

“This is a great way for Iowans to share what they like about rural and urban Iowa,” said Gerry Schnepf, KIB Executive Director. “This photo contest offers both amateur and experienced photographers an opportunity to tell Iowa’s story in a fun, engaging way.”

Over 75 entries were received.

KIB Announces 2019 Paint Iowa Beautiful Program

Paint Iowa Beautiful Grant ProgramKeep Iowa Beautiful and Diamond Vogel Paint are announcing the 2019 Paint Iowa Beautiful program. The program provides free paint to a wide variety of public service projects throughout Iowa. This year Diamond Vogel has agreed to expand the paint allocation to include Iowa’s 70 state parks.

“We are pleased to provide additional paint to enhance Iowa’s state parks,” said Doug Vogel, Vice-President of Marketing, of the Iowa based company. “The 100th anniversary of our state park system will be celebrated in 2020 and the next year provides a great opportunity to spruce up the beauty of our parks.”

“Keep Iowa Beautiful’s 16-year partnership with Diamond Vogel Paint has helped improve over 786 community projects in Iowa,” said Gerry Schnepf, Keep Iowa Beautiful Executive Director. “Over 9,640 gallons of paint and hundreds of local volunteers are helping build stronger Iowa communities through beautification.”

The online grant application is now open to Iowans and can be completed and submitted by February 15, 2019. Access the Paint Iowa Beautiful application HERE.
