Green Runners
Capitol to Corndogs Clean 5K Run
Each year, the Green Runners of Des Moines leads a run from the State Capitol to the Iowa State Fair, collecting trash along the way. The event is free and the first thirty runners to sign up will receive free admission to the State Fair and a free beverage from the Budweiser tent. 2019 marked the 7th year the event has taken place.
Keep Iowa Beautiful works with the Green Runners, the Iowa State Fair and Doll Distributing to support with the shared goal of raising awareness about litter prevention and keeping both Iowa and the Iowa State Fair clean. The run combines the opportunity to improve your health and the health of the neighborhoods by cleaning up litter along the route.
More about the Green Runners
Green running is a way to better yourself AND your community! It is the act of running with a purpose: to make the world a greener place. Runners and walkers of all shapes, sizes and abilities meet in one place to get a workout and make an impact on the earth by picking up the garbage that litters our communities.
Green Runners go for “green runs” in which they lace up and sport their green shirts. These will take place on Thursday nights at 6 pm throughout the summer months. The group selects an area to meet, jog around and clean, and leave greener. Usually some sort of fun event such as getting some food or beverages will take place AFTER the cleanup. You can meet and go with the large group on these group runs (and have a lot of fun doing so!) or you can go on your own time if your schedule won’t allow you to join us. Remember to take pictures to post to our page to show the impact our group is making!
How to Become a Green Runner
First of all, you need not be a marathoner or even an avid runner to be a Green Runner. You only need to have a strong desire to make a difference today so that our children will not be cleaning up our trash in the future! All you need to do is “like” the Green Runner Facebook page. Then you’ll get updates on where we are going to meet each week and have the chance to meet new people who share in your desire to help out.
As they say, “the more the merrier,” so bring along your friends and family. Be a part of something greater and as a result, make a real and lasting impact.
